Graduation season is a very festive time in Hawaii. Of course, none of us really care about the graduation ceremonies themselves, they're only interesting to the people who are in them (and maybe their parents). The rest of us go to lei people! If you're from the mainland, just look at the pictures below to see what I mean!
During the 2006 graduation season, I only attended two ceremonies (as opposed to the four ceremonies I attended the previous year): ‘Aiea and Pearl City. I was supposed to attend Moanalua's, but...well, let's just say it's a long story.
[Aiea] [Pearl City]

The first stop at Aiea's graduation was Tam, who has already been lei'd at least a dozen times only minutes after the gates opened. | 1 |

Yuzu (left) and I (right). I gave Yuzu a graduation bear and a candy lei, after which her mother started saying, "Thank you very much, Higa-san!" I would've attempted to respond to her in Japanese, but my Japanese isn't that good so I just said "you're welcome." Haha, I felt kind of stupid after that. | 2 |

Same as above, except Yuzu's family took two pictures with my camera so I ended up with two different shots. | 3 |

Robin (left) and Heather (right). For some weird reason, it was super crowded around these two particular people so I had a really hard time getting this shot. | 4 |

Jaecie (left) and Kelly (right). Jaecie's boyfriend Gregg is at right. Notice Jaecie's soccer antennas and Kelly's monkey. | 5 |

Steven (left) and Nadine (right), two of the smartest people in school. I know they're not actually looking at the camera, someone else was taking a picture and I decided to just jump in and take a picture at the same time. | 6 |

Maruel was the most popular guy in Aiea, so when I finally got around to him, he was surrounded by masses of people. I had to wait a heck of a long time just to get this shot of him. I guess that's the cost of being friends with the most popular guy in school, haha. Note he's holding his phone in his right hand, like ALWAYS. | 7 |

Karyna (left) and I (right). Note she has the same inflatable things that Robin and Heather have above. My guess is they all came from Stacy or someone similar. | 8 |

Risa (right) and I (left). Risa didn't go to Project Grad, that lazybones! Haha, she went to the fair instead. I scolded her but she never listens to me. | 9 |

Nicole (right) and I (left). Like Risa, she ditched Project Grad. Also like Risa, she never listens to me. | 10 |

Outside of Pearl City's graduation at the dozen or so lei stands that were set up. I took a picture of this one because it was called "Faye's." Aloha Stadium (in baseball configuration for the last time) is in the background. | 14 |

At Pearl City's ceremony. Aanalyn is the girl who just got her diploma and is now walking back to her seat. She has just gotten off the "stage" and is already hand in hand with her partner. I have an interesting story that goes with this picture. The class was supposed to turn their tassels but they were really unorganized so they just cancelled the tassels momentarily and went straight into the class song. After that, the principal came up to the stage and said, "Okay everyone, we're gonna try the turning of the tassels again. Everyone, return your tassels to the left side of your head! Come on now! Let's show everyone that you've actually learned something at Pearl City High School: how to follow directions!" | 15 |

Aanalyn and her mother, Auntie Evelinda. It took me almost fifteen minutes to find her among the sea of short Filipino girls whose last name began with "P." | 16 |
