Pictures: Summer Fun 1998

Summer Fun 1998. (If you don't know what summer fun is, it's a program run by the City & County of Honolulu to give elementary aged kids something to do with their summers instead of wasting away at home.) Aside from the fact that this was a very long time ago in terms of my life (8 years; these are currently the oldest photos I have on this site), I do have some very specific memories. Some are good memories, others are horrible. First of all, let me admit that I really, really didn't enjoy most aspects of summer fun. I mean, I met lots of cool people through it (some of whom I'm still friends with today), but some of the stuff we did was so corny, and a lot of things got too repetitive. I remember playing dodge ball in the gym, and I did enjoy that. I don't know if that was because that was one of the few games I was good at (the others being volleyball and soccer...I sucked at basketball and don't get me started about baseball), but idk. I also enjoyed other, weirder aspects of summer fun as well, like the dancing and the overall photography! Anyway the pages on this page are from the 1998 summer fun program (I moved the 1999 program photos to a different page). Overall, it wasn't a very bad way to spend a summer, and seeing these photos make me nostalgic for my childhood, which wasn't that long ago. Note that some of the photos on this page were taken by my friend Patrick Hong.

These photos are sort of old in Kewlies terms, so it's hard for me to figure out who everyone is. If you see a caption that is wrong or that you can add to (especially names), please contact me and tell me who's who or point out my errors. Thank you.

One fun part about summer fun is the frequent field trips. In this picture, Patrick sat next to me on the bus on a field trip to...I think it was Ice Palace. Anyway, he tormented our junior leaders (teenage volunteers who helped chaperone the kids) by using my camera to snap their pictures...constantly. Well, if someone ever asks where I got that camera habit from, it rubbed off from Patrick. Actually, considering this picture was taken on a bus with bad lighting, it came out pretty good. After the above-mentioned field trip, this picture shows the short treck back down to the Aiea District Park gym. The dude's name you see looking back is Julian. 262
Family Night

A slightly stressful thing about summer fun was "Family Night" (they used to call it the "Finale"), where all the kids would come together and perform something for their families. Anyway, here's a pretty bad picture that demonstrates what that entails. 284

This was the group that I was in for family night. We did this weird thing from "Grease." This photo was taken during the last part of the show, "Summer Nights." 288
